Art awards & training opportunities for young people

 What is Artsmark? (www.artsmark.org.uk )

Arts Council England aims to ensure that every child and young person has the opportunity to experience the richness of the arts. Artsmark is a key delivery mechanism in achieving its ten year strategic commitment.

Artsmark is the national programme that enables schools, further education colleges and youth justice settings to evaluate, celebrate and strengthen a quality arts offer in order to raise achievement and aspirations.

Artsmark aims to ensure that children and young people are able to develop their artistic capabilities, experience and engage with a range of art forms.

It is developed in partnership with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Department of Education and Ofsted.

What is the benefit of Artsmark?

Artsmark shows that you actively promote and celebrate your students’ achievements in the arts.

The Artsmark Award:

·         Celebrates your students’ achievement in the arts
·         Raises the profile of the school and its arts provision
·         Builds rewarding relationships with your local community
·         Gives you real working relationships with arts professionals
·         Gives public recognition to providers of a high quality arts experience
·         Gives you recognition against a nationally approved benchmark

How does it work?

Artsmark provides a clear and supportive audit of the role of the arts in schools, colleges, education centres, and youth offending settings

Schools are enabled to evaluate the opportunities they offer young people in the arts against a benchmark of provision, to identify any areas for development, and to highlight the school’s strengths in the arts.

Gaining an Artsmark at any level demonstrates that a school is committed to the wider development of young people. Schools that have been awarded an Artsmark have cited the application process as highly beneficial in evaluating and developing their arts provision.

 New features for 2011/12
It is a priority of the new scheme for applicants to work with arts professionals to develop relationships and broaden resources, ensuring that future arts provision is balanced, sustainable and of high quality.
One of the new criteria for achieving Artsmark is demonstrating active links with ‘Arts Award’, a national qualification which recognises children and young people’s personal creative development. http://www.artsaward.org.uk/

Training
Arts Council England has appointed two accredited trainers for the Southern region. These are Gaynor Davies and Alistair Black - highly experienced arts educators and schools advisers who are well known to schools and education providers across the region. They are working in partnership and with the key support of Wiltshire Arts Service to provide Artsmark training in venues across the region
There will be a series of half-day training sessions in the autumn term. These will provide guidance on the application process, and offer advice on the criteria for success and recent changes to the programme. The sessions will provide networking opportunities, and give links to key arts organisations to maximise your chance of success. There will also be help with navigating the new on-line application process
