Exciting plans for public art in Melksham

At the next Melksham Area Board meeting on Tuesday 20 September 2011 you will be able to find out about exciting new plans for public art in Melksham.

Recognising that art and design adds value to developments, Wiltshire Council is developing a countywide strategic service aiming to give advice to those involved in commissioning or delivering art and design projects in the public realm. These include council officers, developers, artists, arts and community  organisations.  Rather than commissioning artists to create features to add to a particular development site, the council is encouraging developers to look at integrating art and design into developments from the earliest stage.

For development proposals with significant impact, such as the Land East of Melksham, developers are encouraged to produce an art and design plan researched by a professional creative artist and/or adviser. At the area board, Ginkgo Projects, working for the consortium of developers, will explain how they developed the Land East of Melksham Art Plan and how the community can engage in this over the next few years.

Melksham community area partnership will also be consulting on the arts and culture section of the community plan. They are keen to hear from local people as well as groups that run arts, sports or cultural events and projects.

Angus MacPherson, chairman of Wiltshire Police Authority will also be attending to talk about police performance.

Everyone is invited to come along to the area board meeting at Aleoric School, St Michael's Road, Melksham SN12 6HN. Doors open at 6.30pm with refreshments and information stands including winter highways information and advice. The main meeting will start at 7pm.

The board will also consider awarding funding towards the restoration of the major pond on Poulshot Green, the renovation of the Seend war memorial, new street lighting in King George V Playing Fields (Melksham) and the Melksham Trust promotional DVD.  Melksham Community Area Partnership will also be applying for funding to support their core running costs.

A short DVD will also be shown of the new Bowerhill picnic area that was supported by the area board last year.  The video is also available on youtube.
