NEW SEASON PAWS – APRIL TO SEPTEMBER 2012

Celebrate with Paws is a participatory arts workshop scheme offered by Wiltshire Council with projects designed and run by professional artists, to local community groups.

This unique season entitled, 'Celebrate with Paws' is designed to help Wiltshire communities celebrate the two major events coming this summer including the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The workshops on offer over April to September this year vary from putting your 2012 in motion with an animation project, making your own commemorative plate or mug or even creating a textile tea party. You can work as a group to make bunting, flags and banners for your celebratory events and there are activities to get your talent on the stage such as drama, dance and music. This year we also introduce creative writing for the stage and the option to celebrate British humour through literature. All these great projects are provided by professional, local artists. Have a look at all the project on offer on our menu.

Each paws project runs for a minimum of 8 hours spread over 2 to 4 visits. The workshops cost the groups £35, plus materials and Wiltshire Council pays the artist fees. Some of the groups who have benefited from this scheme include: youth groups; local arts groups; after school clubs; playgroups; holiday schemes; older people's clubs; disability groups; WI's; uniformed groups and community associations.

We are now welcoming applications from community groups for April to September 2012 so please visit the website for further information www.participatoryartswiltshire.co.uk.

The deadline for applications is the 9 March 2012.

Dementia training course for carers

PEOPLE caring for a relative with dementia at home can find out more about coping with the illness at a free training course starting next month. (February 2012)

Six weekly sessions will include a look at the different types of dementia and how they affect people, how to deal with everyday situations that might arise, and practical advice on the legal and financial aspects of caring.

The course is run by independent Wiltshire charity Alzheimer’s Support and funded by Wiltshire Council. All the speakers are experts in their fields.

Anna Littlechild, AS Principal Manager, said: “Carers will learn more about the illness and hopefully feel much better equipped to deal with its effects.  A diagnosis of dementia is a very difficult thing to come to terms with for both the person affected and their families. However, there are coping strategies and things that people can do to make living with memory loss more bearable for the person with dementia and their families.

“We have run these courses in the past and one of the best things is that people meet and make friends with others who are going through similar experiences.”

Councillor Jemima Milton, portfolio holder for adult care from Wiltshire Council said “We recognise the huge contribution that carers make to our communities and the importance of ensuring that they have the skills they need to manage their caring role on a daily basis. We are committed to supporting carers and are pleased to fund this training. We hope it makes not only a difference to carers, but also to the people with dementia that they care for.”

The course will be held at Fullingbridge Farm, off the A350 between Westbury and Trowbridge. If you would like to come along or to find out please contact Stephany Bardzil on 01225 776481.
